ksubi Turns 10 At 'ONE VIA ZERO" RAFW Show
19.04.2010
To celebrate ksubi’s 10 year anniversary, Friday May 7th will see ksubi return to Rosemount Australian Fashion Week after a 3 year hiatus!
ksubi will be the closing show at Fashion Week, with their most highly anticipated runway event to date.
No rats this time, and no models plunging into Sydney Harbour either – what ksubi have up their sleeves is new, exciting, and (of course) a closely guarded secret!
mixitup is thrilled to be producing the event, that celebrates ten years of ideas, individuality, and authenticity that has developed this Australian brand into an underground subculture, an icon, a lifestyle.
ksubi’s new collection titled “One Via Zero” is to be styled by Australia’s international fashion icon, Brana Wolf. Wolf is a top-tier freelance stylist & design consultant who has lent a strong and defining vision to the fashion industry for over 20 years.
Also joining the team as casting director and show caller for ksubi’s RAFW finale show is the internationally reputed Kannon Rajah who has worked with the likes of Victoria’s Secret, Chanel and Dior.
Looks like it’s going to be a very busy year for the team at ksubi.
Stay tuned for announcements on the ksubi -Kirin, partnership programme Kirin Big In Japan
Kelly Rowland Kickin’ it with mixitup at Kit & Kaboodle
05.03.2010
There was nothing Diva about Kelly Rowland when she spread the love amongst a very lucky few at a warm up Mardi Gras event last night in Kings Cross!
Kelly joined the notorious transsexual star Amanda Lapore and fellow singer Adam Lambert at King’s Cross’ Kit & Kaboodle last night for an intimate gathering of VIPs.
Where there is smoke, there certainly is fire – this VIP party was the smoke, the Mardi Gras Party will be the fire!

Spencer Strips For Sydney!
04.03.2010
The loss of his own clothes en route to Sydney didn’t stop internationally acclaimed photographer Spencer Tunick from directing Sydney to decisively lose theirs last Monday!
Commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Spencer Tunick’s call for volunteers was answered by over 5000 Sydney-siders who risked running late for work, having their private parts broadcast on international television and being spotted by a familiar face in the crowd!
An extensive queue of people snaked its way around Circular Quay and into the Royal Botanic Gardens from 3am onwards, lining up to participate. This overwhelming response demonstrates the strong message that we, as Australians aspire to live in an open and equal society. The feeling of togetherness was palpable, as people from all walks of life, gay and straight, lay side-by-side, naked on the Opera House steps.
A deafening applause ended the mass orchestration of nudity, with a slight sentiment of disappointment at Tunick’s instruction to get dressed!
Harbour Party '10
03.03.2010
Harbour Party ’10 on Sunday 28th of February certainly was wet and wild and we’re not just talking about the weather!
Not even a short sun shower could keep revelers away from the picturesque surrounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens with 5000 people turning up to showcase their hot bodies and cheerful dispositions!
mixitup’s production genius shone through the overcast skies, with no effort too great for our extended Mardi Gras family!
Disco was the underlying theme all over the venue, especially the main stage, which was draped in sparkly silver! Party-goers orbited around a gigantic disco ball the size of a small planet, and danced the night away amongst Sydney’s most spectacular Harbour views.
Harbour Party was a wonderful way to rejoice and come together in what was the final event of a memorable Mardi Gras Parade weekend!
2010 Parade Carnival
02.03.2010
The community really threw themselves at the new idea of a post-parade celebration with over 9000 Parade volunteers, Parade participants and their party-seeking friends generating a true community atmosphere at the inaugural Parade Carnival!
For one night only, the Byron Kennedy Hall into the Disco Dome with DJs Luke Leal, Alan T and Justin Scott carving up the decks. The Forum Funhouse flaunted Francisco Guerra all the way from San Francisco, Shigeki and Beatrix with their happy house tunes, while the parade buzz continued in the Show Ring with an abundance of food and live entertainment till 6am!
And the best bit about it was – it was FREE!!
Parade participation got you in for free and if you weren’t game enough to strut your stuff down Oxford Street, you only needed to offer a helping hand as a volunteer or a Mardi Gras member for unique access to the exclusive Parade After Party!
Sometimes the best things in life sure are free!
2010 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade Highlights!
01.03.2010
Beginning as a civil rights protest in 1978, the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, now in it’s 32nd year, not only remains a display of solidarity and a demand for equality by the GLBTIQ community, but has evolved into a two-week festival including two of the most famous parties in the world and of course the jewel in the crown - the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
The world’s most famous transsexual, Amanda Lepore was thrilled and excited in her role as Chief of Parade, fulfilling her promise to be as naked as possible - bar a few strategically placed rhinestones!
But it was the ANZ bank’s float that unquestionably eclipsed even Amanda Lepore’s glitter and glam, as over 100 ANZ employees shone brighter than a full moon in silver lycra and shiny disco ball helmets!
The ANZ float (a rockin’ blue hummer decked with a boisterous sound system and even a bunch of glitter canons) is a symbol of ANZ’s culturally diverse workforce, and encourages other organisations to follow their lead as Australia’s workforce becomes increasingly colourful.

Packages include tickets to many of this year’s Mardi Gras’ most coveted events, including a wide range of parties, arts and cultural events and social events around Sydney’s tourist attractions from Manly Beach to Luna Park. They also include exclusive parade viewing access.
The packages will be promoted through a joint print and online campaign, targeting both interstate markets and New Zealand.
In August 2009, Events NSW research showing that Mardi Gras brought over 21,000 visitors into New South Wales in 2009, generating almost $30 million in new money for the State.

How Good Are Days Like This...
11.01.2010
It’s not everyday that Sydney-siders get the opportunity to experience a multitude of epic international talent on the same day or at the same venue.
Days like Sunday January 10th don’t come around that often!
The Days Like This Festival, held at Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter, is a unique little gem, which really caters to dedicated hip-hop, soul, reggae and techno lovers.
With a Coopers in one hand and a piece of Gozleme in the other, we made our way through the five stages of exhilarating entertainment!
Theo Parrish produced some wicked beats on the Forum Stage, the Cat Empire were a crowd favourite, lighting up the Main Stage in the late evening and Roots Manuva hyped up the crowd with their electronica.
But it was hip-hop legends Method Man & Redman who the crowd had really come for! Blowing up the stage like the bomb squad they are, the duo made the crowd go wild!
The 2011 bill has some massive shoes to fill next year, but we’re sure festival organisers will go the distance!
Watch this space for updates.
Happy Campers Celebrate The New Year At Falls!
08.01.2010
Whether it was the urge to let loose after an extremely busy year or just that good ol’ gal Mother Nature keeping the mercury hovering around 40 degrees, we don’t know. But what we do know is, it was a steamy start to festival season for mixitup!
First stop: The Falls Music & Arts Festival, Lorne Victoria & Marion Bay Tasmania. Summer frivolity was the name of the game as a sold out crowd of 16,000 punters in each town added a wondrous new chapter to The Falls Festival history books.
Virgin Blue also added a new chapter to the Falls history books this year, offering you lot the opportunity to snap up the last 50 tickets in each state, along with cheap flights, a two-man tent and sleeping bag. And boy did people jump at the chance!
Musical highlights of the festival included Sydney lads, Art Vs Science who yielded the best sing-a-long in festival history, Moby’s sweet sounds painted vivid pictures across the minds of young and old, the Hilltop Hoods who carved it up in Lorne while headline act the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s brought in 2010 in Marion Bay.
Good people, good music, good times.
Next year’s festival is already in the works believe it or not and it’s only a matter of time before we let you in on what’s cooking in the kitchen, so stay tuned!
Click here if you'd really like to get acquainted with Lorne & Marion Bay!
Sunset Sounds - A Sold Out Summer Sensation!
05.01.2010
Hot off the heels of a stellar four-night NYE run at The Falls Music & Arts Festival, we traded our tents and veggie burgers for two days of afternoon beers and socially-conscious water at Sunset Sounds 2010.
Now kids, it may have only been Sunset Sound’s second year on the scene, but this little beauty always had a sell out on the cards! Even the light rain didn’t do much to dampen 15,000 guests’ thirst for world-class international and national musical luminaries!
We were all spoilt with incredible performances from Australian act The Temper Trap (incredible!), Xavier Rudd (unbelievable!), Midnight Juggernaughts (mesmerizing!), Lisa Mitchell (Captivating!), Sarah Blasko (Blissful!), Grizzly Bear (Stunning!), the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s (Karen O’s voice enchanting!) and the world renowned Moby!
One thing is for sure, this young summer fiesta has come up with the goods two years in a row, and we look forward to watching it mature in years to come!

When Love Takes Over! - What Star Studded Line-Up Are they Hiding?!
29.12.2009
We consider the New Mardi Gras crew as part of the mixitup extended family and Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the next massive event on our summer calendar!
In preparation for the two-week cultural festival that is the best gay event in the world, (Shhh don’t tell anyone I’m telling you this!) Greg wears his diamond encrusted tiara ‘round the office, Peita pulls out her sequins and stilettos and Stu, well Stu brushes his bushy locks for once!!! And all the while we work vigorously to provide the best opportunities for our sponsors! Goodness me, it’s exhausting.
As well as securing partnerships with ANZ, Virgin Blue, V Australia, Mount Franklin, Budweiser and Cockfighter’s Ghost, mixitup is facilitating the continuation of Mardi Gras Parade celebrations by producing the first ever Post Parade Carnival!
15,000 Parade volunteers, participants, NMG Members and their friends are invited to keep kicking on at the Show Ring, Dome and Forum at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park on the 27th of February!
We want you to keep your frock on, step out of line, forget your choreography from Parade, check out winning floats up close and get loose!
And if that wasn’t enough Mardi Gras madness around the mixitup office, we’ll also be producing the Mardi Gras’ Harbour 10 dance event on the 28th of February to be set at the Fleet steps against the iconic backdrop of Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge!
Set in the tropical surrounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens, with two beautiful garden dance floors, Harbour ’10 will be the perfect recovery after the Parade the night before.
It’s no wonder they’re expecting a sell-out Harbour party as international and interstate visitors get down with thousands of locals, soaking up the sunshine (and the cocktails) till the sun sets.
Spinning at the Harbourside stage are UK favourites DJ Wayne G and Paul Heron, along with local crowd-pleaser, Paul Goodyear, while DJ’s Sista P, Kitty Glitter and Jason Barry serve up a funky mix of house beats on the upper stage.
And don’t forget Mardi Gras Party on March 6th, David Guetta… Bimbo Jones… and many more top-secret performers. mixitup has the scoop on more international celebrity guests set to rock Mardi Gras 2010, so watch this space for further updates!

mixitup Produces Party of The Year!
14.12.2009
Some described it as “extravagant”, others described it as “bizarre”. But according to the majority… and we all know a majority rules… the Kirin Big In Japan event was… (drum roll please)…. Party of the Year![nbsp] (pedestrian.tv)
Yes, that’s right ladies and gentleman, mixitup produced an epic event where Japanese contemporary art was appreciated like never seen before!
We had Daito Manabe face hacking to the sound of bleeps and white noise, Trippple Nippples carving up the stage with their Lady-Gaga-looks-conservative costumes, Mademoiselle Yulia pumping up the crowd with her exquisite beats and Kathy captivating the crowd in a trance with their truly unique performance art…

Kirin & Ksubi Announce Big In Japan Event
12.11.2009
Brought to you by Kirin, created by ksubi. The Kirin ‘Big In Japan’ event will be truely unique!
The digital and experiential event will take place December 2nd 2009, at Sydney’s new home for contemporary arts, CarriageWorks.
The first of it’s kind in Australia, the event will showcase a selection of contemporary Japanese artists & musicians— all curated by an iconic contemporary Australian fashion label.
Performers are those teetering on the verge of success in Japan, including sound designer, Daito Manabe, Japanese
DJ/MC Mademoiselle Yulia, eerie performance trio, Kathy, and mind blowing electronic group, Trippple Nippples—all being flown to Sydney specifically for the event.
The bold arts centre dedicated to the development and presentation of contemporary arts, Carriageworks, will be dimly lit throughout three large performance spaces, acting as an engaging and inspiring platform for these artists to showcase their talent.
Daito Manabe will be redefining existent media and technologies from unique angles by producing the output of sounds, images & light from various sensors in an audio/visual installation.
Clad in identical blond wigs with black pantyhosed faces, Kathy render themselves completely featureless because
anonymity is the ideal point of surveillance. Their eerie and ritualistic performances have been described as Moulin Rouge meets Victorian morality meets Lucifer rising.
Tokyo’s queen of the underground electro scene, Mademoiselle Yulia, along with her ubiquitios blue or purple bob will perform her DJ set awhilst MC/singing, and Trippple Nippple’s unhinged DIY aesthetic, and inimitably intense live energy & songs about teaching your nipples to speak, will make for an incredible performance.
On display at the event is also an exciting curation of Japanese visual artists— exhibiting in the mediums of print, photography and design in the ‘First Press’ gallery space.
Post event, selected visual artists from Kirin “Big In Japan’ will be exhibited for a two week period at Black and Blue Gallery, Chippendale.
The Kirin ‘Big in Japan’ programme was initiated in July with the introduction of www.biginjapan.com.au, a blog edited by Sydney writer Amelia Groom & showcases everything from Japanese fashion to architecture, music to magnetic art, cinema to robotics, haute couture floristry to photography, abandoned theme parks to ceramics, and instillation art to anime. For more information on artists, their profiles and the Kirin ‘Big In Japan’
programme make sure to log on.

New Mardi Gras today announced the signing of a new sponsorship agreement with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Blue Airlines group - comprising brand new long haul international airline V Australia, long time supporter Virgin Blue and sister airline Pacific Blue Airlines which flies to New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands.
The new four year agreement, designed to target growth in visitor numbers to the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras will see the airlines assist in promoting the event across a growing network now spanning 28 Australian cities and towns and 13 international destinations including the USA, South Pacific and Southeast Asian countries.
“Mardi Gras is an amazing, spectacular, international celebration and right across our network our team understand the significance and importance of it,” said Heather Jeffery, General Manager of Media and Communications for the Virgin Blue airlines.
“Many of our Virgin Blue team members have had enormous fun supporting Mardi Gras for the past three years and now with an expanding airline network, we look forward to helping bring even more international and local visitors to experience the colour, creativity and community which underpins yet another iconic Sydney event,” she said.
“I am so proud that Virgin Blue is back for another term and tremendously excited that V Australia has come on board,” said New Mardi Gras CEO Anna McInerney.
“We will be encouraging people to fly with New Mardi Gras friendly airlines and Virgin Blue and V Australia’s booking facilities will be easily accessible via the New Mardi Gras website so that patrons can easily access flight prices and times for their trip to Sydney.
In August, Events NSW research showing that Mardi Gras brought over 21,000 visitors into New South Wales in 2009, generating almost $30 million in new money for the State. Of these visitors New Mardi Gras estimates that just under half are international travelers with the US and UK each accounting for just under a third of the total.
Mardi Gras Urges Sydneysiders To Bare All For New Work By Spencer Tunick
05.11.2009
New Mardi Gras announced that a new work called The Base by internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Spencer Tunick would be one of this year's Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival, with thousands of Sydneysiders and Mardi Gras visitors expected to participate nude in one of Tunick’s signature groundbreaking art installations on March 1st 2010.
Tunick’s art challenges the preconceived notions of nudity and the culturally charged, often negative, connotations that are associated with it. In his work, it is the beauty inherent in all human beings that prevails. This is Spencer Tunick's first large-scale installation in Sydney.
Born in Middletown, New York in 1967, Tunick currently lives in the Hudson Valley in New York State. Since 1992, he has done more than 95, short-lived, site-specific installations across the United States, Canada, and overseas.
Tunick broke his own record in 2007 when he encouraged more than 18,000 Mexicans to take their clothes off and pose for him at the Zocalo square in Mexico City! Tunick has raised eyebrows by staging mass nude photo shoots in cities from Dusseldorf, Germany, to Caracas, however the Mexico City photo shoot certainly smashed his previous record of 7,000 volunteers set in 2003 in Barcelona, Spain.
“Spencer’s work will be a jewel in the crown of Mardi Gras 2010,” said NMG CEO Anna McInerney. “The installations will take place on the Monday after the Parade and is part of our commitment to providing an array of unique experiences within the two-week festival.”
Tunick’s visit will be supported by NMG with assistance from the City of Sydney.
The artist invites Sydney’s non-gay community to come together and participate with Sydney’s Gay community to make a unique communal artwork.
Those wishing to shed their clothes for art on 1st March 2010 should sign-up at www.mardigras.org.au/tunick.

Virgin Falls For Tassie
13.10.2009
The Falls Festival is flying high with Virgin Blue Australia signing on as the official airline of the event.
A new partnership between the Falls Festival, Virgin Blue and Tourism Tasmania will allow Falls organisers to bring 23 international artists to Hobart for this year's festival, up from 19 last year.
But the benefits of the deal will really start to show next year, when Virgin Blue will offer exclusive "VFalls" flights from interstate to Tasmania just for Falls patrons.
The ever-growing number of Falls patrons from interstate inject millions of dollars into the state's economy each year.
Last summer, 28 per cent of the 16,000 Falls punters travelled from interstate to attend the event and that figure is set to increase dramatically this year, generating more valuable tourism dollars.
Falls founder Simon Daly said the partnership was a "perfect fit" for the event and the state.
"It makes the festival more accessible, and highlights the Marion Bay Falls Festival as the must-do event on music lovers' calendars across Australia," Mr Daly said.
Virgin Blue's online booking facility is now available on the Falls website, so patrons can easily access flight information and plan their trip to Hobart.
"Virgin Blue has a long-term love affair with Tasmania and Hobart, and that is reflected in the eight flights daily we operate to the city," Virgin Blue marketing and sponsorship manager Pete White said.
"We are pleased to be partnering with Tourism Tasmania to support the Falls Festival, and look forward to bringing visitors to Hobart to experience the sights and delights of Hobart and the festival."
Tourism Tasmania chief executive Felicia Mariani said the Falls Festival is an integral part of the organisation's events marketing strategy.
"The Falls Festival has been a very successful event in Tasmania for the past seven years and is working with Tourism Tasmania to drive tourism potential around the event," Ms Mariani said.
Full-festival tickets for this year sold out on Friday. A small number of tickets for the Falls Funk 'n' Soul Revue on December 29 are still available from www.fallsfestival.com.
Downsyde Takes Out The 2009 Red Bull Soundclash!
12.10.2009
It’s final. Hip hop heavyweights, Downsyde are the winners of the Red Bull Soundclash for 2009, beating indie rock sensation Little Red in a closely contested battle of the bands. From one challenging round to the next, blow by blow, note by note, the unstoppable Downsyde finally defeated Little Red to claim the coveted trophy.
The energy at the UNSW Roundhouse was at its peak as fans streamed from the beer garden and into the Roundhouse for the second Soundclash event to hit Oz. Channel V presenters Renee and Kyle proved to be a dynamic duo in hosting the innovative musical event, and with DJ Leeroy Brown of Katalyst on the decks, the excitement was undeniable.
When the bands finally took to their respective stages, the Roundhouse was filled to the brink and the 700-strong crowd brought the commotion. The audience were transported from rock to reggae, house to hip-hop and ultimately decided who the winner was based on applause. The “decibel-meter” measured the sonic energy of the crowd by microphone, which was meticulously positioned from the ceiling. The results were then displayed on massive screens for all to see.
After a tight four-round contest it was hip-hop that reigned supreme with Downsyde taking out the trophy and with it, a place in Red Bull Soundclash history.
The competitive energy on stage was really more of a friendly rivalry, and the bands played this competition to perfection. The music was never-heard-before, jaw-dropping brilliance and the crowd appreciated every minute.
As the giant Red Bull Soundclash trophy was handed over to Downsyde, the two bands united on stage for a final performance of Bob Marley’s ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ to end the night. The fans suddenly found themselves cheering for both bands and there was no longer any sign of competition. Both bands certainly flexed their musical muscles and made sure nobody would forget this one-of-a-kind music event!
If you weren’t there to witness the action in person or just want to re-live the experience Channel [V] will be screening the 2009 Red Bull Soundclash on Sunday November 1st at 11.00am.
The Red Bull Stage at F1 Rocks Singapore
09.10.2009
It was a three day musical extravaganza in Singapore when some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the world performed on the Red Bull Stage at the inaugural F1 Rocks Singapore music festival, held September 24th – 26th 2009.
Red Bull is certainly a brand that loves to do things differently, and in keeping with that ethos, mixitup created a truly unique design for the Red Bull Stage: shipping containers stacked on top of one another, against a backdrop of natural greenery at Fort Canning Park.
The outcome was a visual treat for fans, with its modern, raw industrial design and graffiti artwork. Some lucky fans even got the chance to enter the special VIP area atop a container for a direct view of the stage. A totally unique concert experience!
Brooklyn based rock band, Black Gold, headlined the stage, accompanied by UK beatbox extraordinaire Killa Kela and ZPYZ from Berlin. The supporting cast included Singapore’s very own Red Bull Music Academy alumni DJs Debbie Chia, Vijay Singh, Aresha and Sonicbrat, as well as popular local DJ Ko Flow. Completing the line-up was DJ Chris McGuiness from India, better known as the godfather of the Indian hip hop scene.
On-screen visuals were created by Singaporean VJ duo Achtung!Achtung (that’s German for Attention! Attention! in case you didn’t know) who have worked with Steve Aoki and The Rapture, amongst many others.
With Red Bull’s strong engagement with the Formula 1, and history of innovative music projects around the globe, the Red Bull Stage was a natural fit for a mega event like F1 Rocks!

04.09.2009

THE BATTLE
As promised, the Red Bull Soundclash will deliver non-stop excitement from the word go. Round 2 – The Take Over: Musical ping pong: One band starts a track and the other has to finish. Round 3 – The Clash: The remix round: Each band has to remix three of their own tracks in three different styles. Round 4 – The Joker: The secret weapon: Each band pulls out a wildcard….a big time musical friend! The Final: The winning band takes to the stage to close the show.
THE BANDS

Perth lads Downsyde have also solidified their place in Australian music. These hip-hop heavyweights have been breaking barriers and thrilling audiences around the country for almost a decade! 2008 saw them release the much lauded and critically acclaimed album ‘All City’ which gave rise to the now anthemic tune ‘Fortune and Fame’. Pioneers of the Aussie hip-hop craft, these guys will certainly be a tough match!

Andy’s Riot!
04.09.2009
Andy Griffiths received a rock star welcome yesterday with more than 1000 students and fans lining the streets of Mildura for an autograph signing of his new book Robot Riot!
Touring regional Australia with his face plastered on the side of his tour bus, signing hundreds of books, Andy is more of a star than he could have imagined 20 years ago as a punk rock singer who had just moved to Mildura.
Andy says it’s wonderful to hear his books are turning a new generation of children on to reading. “They’re still enjoying the same stories, I don’t think kids change a lot in what they find funny”.
Griffiths has won more than 40 Australian Children’s Choice Awards for his books, which have sold more than four million copies worldwide and have been featured on the New York Times bestsellers lists.
Nations United A Celebration of Humanity in All of its Diversity!
19.08.2009
The times they are a changin’ – finally!
In 2007 a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission report recommended more than a hundred amendments to federal law in Australia. The then government sidelined the report as too controversial. The community, we were told, was not ready for it. The new federal government introduced many of the reforms in 2008 with little opposition, proving society was in advance of the politicians.
Our Mardi Gras partners and partnerships demonstrate the large intellectual movement afoot in Australia. All of our partners truly believe that it is intolerable for any person, straight or gay to be discriminated against. When “blue-chip” companies recognize sexually - orientated minorities as an attribute of their corporate nature, we can be certain that we are on the path towards treating all citizens of our nation equally.
Change and progress takes time.
Since the 1969 Stonewall riots and the original 1978 Sydney protest march, much has been learnt and achieved. Indeed, not everything has been achieved. But one day it will be.
Our partners and partnerships are stimulating the process of reform. Be sure of that. Together with us in the Mardi Gras spirit, one that has generated reform and challenged the status quo we celebrate, congratulate and pay tribute to our partners.
Acknowledging Mardi Gras as the world’s premiere GLBT festival were our government partners, Events NSW and the City of Sydney. We celebrated with first time sponsors Flight Centre, Midori, Atlantis and Budweiser. Joining us again to create a brave new world was ANZ, IKEA, Red Bull, Gaydar, Virgin Blue, Pump and SX.
Our partners’ bravery and commitment are vital in helping the community achieve the ultimate goal of creating laws that protect minorities and assures all people of a full and equal place in the society of our nation.
Nations United…imagine that!
Yours in unity,
Greg Segal

Mardi Gras Brings in the Pink Dollars!
07.08.2009
New Mardi Gras (NMG) today revealed Events NSW research showing that Mardi Gras brought over 21,000 visitors into New South Wales in 2009, generating almost $30 million in new money for the State.
The research originated from a comprehensive review of the 2009 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras carried out by Events NSW. A face-to-face survey of over 1,200 attendees was carried out by an independent research company on Parade night as well as an online survey of more than 400 Mardi Gras Partygoers.
Key estimates include:
• Over 21,000 visitors from interstate or overseas came specifically for Mardi Gras
• Overseas visitors stayed an average of 10.5 nights in Sydney and NSW
• Interstate visitors stayed an average of 3.9 nights in Sydney and NSW
• Overall direct economic impact into NSW: $29,548,761.
These results mean that Mardi Gras is one of the State’s best performing events on the NSW Master Events Calendar.
The review also included a media monitoring study that found Mardi Gras generated 448 press articles published in interstate and key NSW tourism markets, accounting for a cumulative circulation of over 40 million. Television and radio items broadcast in interstate markets had a cumulative audience of almost 17 million.
“We are delighted at the results this research has delivered,” said NMG CEO Anna McInerney. “Not only do they demonstrate what a major draw Mardi Gras is and its economic significance for the State, but they also help us understand our audience better.”
“Events NSW investment in New Mardi Gras has allowed us to pursue a growth strategy with confidence. There is enormous potential to increase both the volume and quality of visitation and we are absolutely determined to achieve this.”
Events NSW CEO Geoff Parmenter said we are thrilled at the outcome of this research, which clearly shows Mardi Gras is an important Sydney event that successfully drives tourism and generates significant economic benefit for NSW.
“In our role as strategic partner, we worked closely with New Mardi Gras in developing an enduring and sustainable business model that has ensured a future for the event in Sydney.
“Sydneysiders should be very proud of this iconic event. It showcases the diversity of our city to the world and we are confident Mardi Gras will continue to deliver for the State over the coming years.

Andy Griffiths on Tour for Just Macbeth
10.06.2009
After a period of writing hibernation, international best-selling author Andy Griffiths is feeling fresh, invigorated and ready to hit the road. Kicking off on the 3rd of July, Andy will begin his four-week national book tour to promote his latest children’s novel Just Macbeth. Adding to Andy’s entourage, mixitup created a moving promotional billboard that will follow Andy on his journey across the countryside.
Just Macbeth is the script of the successful play following Andy, Danny and Lisa in their first ever full length adventure. Performed in 2008 by the Bell Shakespeare Company, Just Macbeth is one of the most hilarious, dramatic, moving stories of love, Wizz Fizz, witches, murder and madness!
Andy will give a series of sixty-minute presentations in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Maitland and the Central Coast. He is expected to be mobbed by kids, thanked by parents, perhaps chastised by teachers and librarians, but above all welcomed with fanfare into local bookshops.
Make sure you’re there when Andy comes to your town!
Jagermeister partners with the AIR Charts
30.05.2009
Ground breaking news on the Australian independent music scene this week with the exciting announcement that Jagermeister has partnered with the AIR Charts, making the Jagermeister AIR Charts the only charts in the world to secure the ongoing support of a naming rights sponsor.
The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) produces the Jagermeister AIR Charts which track the sales of Australian artists released by Australian independent labels both monthly and weekly.
Click here to check out this week’s Jagermeister AIR Charts.
Even in the current climate of global financial crisis, the rapid growth of the Australian independent music scene demonstrates the strength of the independent music sector in Australia, and Jagermeister’s backing of the AIR Charts is further evidence of this.
Over the past two years Jagermeister has displayed their continual support of Australia’s indie music community through their sponsorship of the annual AIR Awards. Last year’s televised event saw Melbourne’s Corner Hotel packed to the rafters and this year’s ceremony will be no exception!
Jagermeister’s agreement to take on further sponsorship of the AIR Charts is a clear demonstration of their passion to promote Australian independent artists to Australia and the world. Stay posted for details on the 2009 Jagermeister AIR Awards set to take place this November in Melbourne.
V Festival Punters Revel In Branson Bliss!
06.04.2009
V Festival was bigger and better than ever this year, leaving punters revelling in true Branson bliss! The success of V Festival can be attributed to the smorgasbord of music genres combined with stunning locations and staggering atmosphere generated by the punters.
As promised, V Festival delivered the Australian gig goer a truly unique experience, showcasing some of the hottest international and local acts for the third year running.
As we made our way from ‘This Stage’ to ‘That Stage’ and onto ‘The Other Stage’, and the ‘Virgin Music Stage’, it was obvious why 90,000 Aussies in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast made V Festival a matter of national importance!
Headlining act The Killers enthralled their fanatic following while Ireland’s Snow Patrol returned once again to enchant the masses. Musical sensation The D0 had fans of all genres grooving along to their contagious songs and Duffy’s soulful tunes were a stark contrast to the indie rock echo of Louis XIV. Other acts included Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, The Kills, M83, The Human League, Elbow, Jenny Lexis, The Howling Bells and Jackson Jackson. But the icing on the V Festival cake was certainly American rapper Vanilla Ice giving us his 90’s classic Ice Ice Baby.
V Festival certainly pushes the boundaries within the live music circuit, providing everyone with a little something and has firmly established itself within the music festival arena. V Festival will be back by popular demand in March 2010 so stay tuned for some exciting details to come in the near future!

Sydney 2009 Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras
10.03.2009
Rio de Janeiro’s Brazilian Carnaval ain’t got nothin’ on Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and this year’s festival was no exception! If you missed out on standing on the milk crates along Sydney’s renowned Oxford Street, never fear, we fastened our Gucci seat belts and strapped a dike on a bike in preparation to take you up close and personal on the glitz and glamour that was Mardi Gras 2009. The last time we saw this many men in feathers and beads was when Tom Cruise came out to play while the Mrs was away!
Due to its overwhelming popularity, Fair Day became the official launch party for Mardi Gras 09. Despite the torrential downpour, 25,000 people, a myriad of the diverse community groups of Sydney, turned up to open the festivities, catching some dynamic acts at the Lounge Bar and on the Broadway Stage, strolling amongst the stalls and relaxing on the grassy knolls of Victoria Park (in their raincoats and ponchos of course).
The Mardi Gras Film Festival brought us the very best in internationally acclaimed queer flicks to keep the film buffs ecstatic, while the Festival Bar at the Supper Club provided killer entertainment to all with acts like Trevor Ashley, Kristy Apps and Melissa J Evans, Bob Downe and Dollies and Soldiers.
The lush scenery of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens reminded an international audience why Mardi Gras’ Harbour Party is regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular. Everybody danced well into the evening, Midori cocktail in hand with the magic of Sydney’s Opera House and stunning Harbour Bridge as their backdrop.
This year’s Nations United theme was the perfect Mardi Gras Parade backdrop and provided a warm welcome to our GLBTIQ international guests. Joan Rivers and her acid tongue were stationed on the Pink carpet as one of the celeb hosts for the Foxtel live broadcast. For the first time in 7 years, Foxtel took the Mardi Gras parade into lounge rooms Australia–wide. Certainly a testament to the growth and appeal of the Mardi Gras festival.
As if the excitement, energy and costumes of the parade weren’t enough, the world-renowned post-parade Party had us grooving even further into the night, ending three weeks of pandemonium with a bang!! Thanks Nat Bassingthwaighte!!
Whether you were a boy who likes boys, a girl who likes girls, or any other colour on the GLBTIQ rainbow, people of all walks of life and nationalities united to celebrate, leaving exhausted smiles all the way up the Oxford Street strip.

All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival 2009
20.01.2009
Here at mixitup, we’ve always envied cities like New York, London, Barcelona and Edinburgh who have had the pleasure of hosting the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival.
So you can imagine our excitement when originator Barry Hogan decided to pack his British festival swag and bring us his boutique festival, highly praised for treating people with respect, pricing drinks reasonably and presenting decent bands who play a lot of sets!
Sydney, Mt Buller and Brisbane were the three Aussie locations chosen to host this music event, in unique and intimate settings in each state .
As per tradition, the curation of the event was handed over to an influential and revered force in music. In 09, the honour was bestowed on Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, who genuinely made the festival their own. They called on international artists Spiritualized and James Blood Ulmer, not to mention Aussie mates The Saints, Laughing Clowns and The Necks to help stir up the crowd. It was a diverse, eclectic line-up never to be seen again!
On Sydney’s Cockatoo Island, performances took place across four outdoor stages and guests could be seen chilling at a number of indoor and outdoor bars. The impressive turnout was made up of real music lovers who sought to both reconnect with their fave acts from years gone by, and uncover fresh talent.
We’ll keep you up to date with all future ATP-related news, so hit up our news section regularly. Believe us, if you missed the first Aussie ATP, don’t miss your chance this time. You won't forget this festival in a hurry.
Let There Be Light @ Sunset Sounds 2009
10.01.2009
Falls Festival organisers proclaimed “Let there be light” in Brisbane this week as they illuminated the Sunshine State with their Sunset Sounds Festival for the first time ever.
And sunshine there absolutely was.
Everyone was feelin’ hot hot hot as our beloved sun burnt country blessed us with flawless examples of Australian summer heat. Punters spent Wednesday and Thursday in sweltering conditions amongst the brilliant backdrop of Brisbane’s stunning Botanical and City Gardens.
Turning up the heat even higher was the summer festival’s scorching line-up, bragging massive names as The Hives, The Kooks, Franz Ferdinand, Tegan and Sarah as well as Santogold.
Sunset Sounds appealed to the punter within thousands of Brisbaners who spent two sultry evenings frolicking in the Gardens, taking in some of the most picturesque sights Australia has to offer. No wonder both days were well and truly sold out with capacity for the venue increased to accommodate a whopping 25,OOO partygoers.
Sunset Sounds has well and truly gained the respect of Brisbane’s music savvy community, kicking off 2009 with a bang. And what a way to initiate the New Year indeed!
After its successful inauguration, Australia’s hottest summer festival will light up the Sunshine State once again in 2010 so be sure to stay tuned for the lineup announcement!
Modular 10th Birthday Bash @ Nevereverland
30.12.2008
Nevereverland first hit Australian shores in 2007 with music duo Daft Punk generating an atmosphere of pure electronic ecstasy. With the inaugural event resulting in such a colossal sensation, Nevereverland became the most enthusiastically anticipated music event of the 2008 Australian calendar!
In an attempt to feed their music addiction, young Australians flocked to venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth not only to get their groove on, but to commemorate the 10th birthday of Australia’s most influential independent record label, Modular.
And commemorate they did.
Modular turned double digits in style with the likes of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes of Australia’s very own premier electronic act The Presets putting on a show to help celebrate a decade of rollin’ out the hits. The audacious indie-dance duo launched the crowd into musical mayhem, belting out hit tunes from their six-time Aria award-winning album Apocalypto.
But that wasn’t all Modular had install for the Nevereverland clique. The line-up was nothing short of mind-blowing with acts like the Klaxons, Ladyhawke, Cut Copy, Hercules & Love Affair, Whitest boy Alive, to name a few, performing hit after hit, each tune accumulating the ecstatic energy of the last to generate what was an absolutely astonishing atmosphere for all.
Click here to catch a glimpse of some live footage of the event!
The crowd’s deafening applause was a testament to the complete success of Nevereverland, the pinnacle of the 2008 Australian music calendar and left party-goers pondering why such an event can’t be foreverever!
Happy 10TH Birthday Modular !!
Stay tuned for the anticipated announcement of the 2009 Nevereverland line-up to be released in the near future!!
Red Bull Soundclash First time in Australia!
12.12.2008
Gloves became musical instruments and mouth guards became microphones last night as the Hordern Pavillion transformed into a musical boxing ring for the Red Bull Soundclash. Rock and hip hop culture, complete opposites of the musical spectrum, went head to head exchanging blows for an entire evening in what was the musical bout of the century.
The Red Bull Soundclash has its roots deep in the tropical reggae sound system clashes of Jamaica, but trust Red Bull to give it a contemporary caffeinated twist, pitting bands of opposing genres against each other to create a unique clash of sound, style and creativity.
In one corner was TZU with a planned attack of beats and rhymes and in the other, The Vasco Era looking for salvation in the holy trinity of guitar, bass and drums. The crowd, acting as referee, were plot in the middle of the two stages to actively judge each band’s musical prowess during the interactive musical performance.
The Vasco Era abided by all the artistic rules of the musical conversation to beat up their opponent, TZU in four rounds. The ecstatic cheers of the crowd measured off the decibel-o-meter, leaving host Yumi Stynes no choice but to crown the Vasco Era as the Red Bull Soundclash King.
The extraordinary music contest set pulses racing, and left everyone’s eardrums ringing well into the night.
Click here to view the action from the inaugural event!
I wonder what musical genius will step into the ring in 2009 when the Red Bull Soundclash comes to town in October. Be sure to find all the details here as soon as they are announced!!
