The 2012 JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS have wrapped up their seventh year delivering a superbly entertaining evening and bestowing 12 Awards on some of Australia’s finest talent, with CHET FAKER the only multiple award winner, taking out two major honours.

Rising star CHET FAKER (aka Nick Murphy) well and truly made his mark on the evening, not only with a surprise unannounced live performance, but also by picking up the awards for Best Independent Single / EP for the critically acclaimed “Thinking In Textures” and the award for Breakthrough Independent Artist.  A Subtle slice of Soulful electronica, the debut ep has gathered a groundswell of interest both here and internationally, and proved to be a worthy and popular winner on the night.

The hotly contested Best Independent Album category was taken out by Sydney garage punk band ROYAL HEADACHE for their self-titled debut album. Championed by the likes of Pitchfork amongst other noteworthy media around the globe, ROYAL HEADACHE’S self-titled debut is a paragon of garage power pop that manages to capture the energy and antics of the band’s much lauded electric live show.

Last year’s only dual award winners THE JEZABELS backed it up again in 2012, and repeated the success by taking out the award for Best Independent Artist, the award they won in 2011.  This award sees the band capping off yet another massive year for them both locally and internationally.

2011’s Peoples choice award winner 360 won the JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD for Best Independent Hip Hop Album for the epic release, “Falling and Flying”.   An inspired mix of rap’s traditional down-to-earth grit and indie electro’s atmospheric heights, this second album for 360 has reached Platinum plus status, achieved critical acclaim, and been the catalyst for sell out tour dates across the country in the past 12 months.

One of the most hotly talked about bands of the past year, Brisbane two-piece DZ DEATHRAYS took out the award for Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album for their debut album Bloodstreams”.  A 14 track assault vehicle, the album represents the duo’s last four years of hard work and is a deserving recipient of this year’s award.

This year also saw the Awards expanding into new territory, with the introduction of the Best Independent Label category, which was voted for by their Record Label peers.  The inaugural awards was taken home by ELEFANT TRAKS, the Sydney Hip Hop collective who in the past year have released albums from The Herd, Urthboy, Hermitude, Sietta, The Last Kinection and Sky'High.

On the dance front, TOM PIPER also achieved back to back wins, taking out the award for Best Independent Dance / Electronica or Club single with his collaboration with DANIEL HARLEY, for their single “LGFU”. And after a stellar live performance of their hit single “Speak Of The Devil” – which mirrored their exceptional award winning video - HERMIITUDE took out the award for Best Independent Dance / Electronica album with “HyperParadise”.

The Award for the Best Independent Blues and Roots Album went to LANIE LANE for her debut album “To The Horses”.  Exploding onto the scene in the past 18 months singer-songwriter and guitarist LANIE LANE not only brought her unique talent and charisma to the stage with her performance at this year’s Awards, but her debut album with its collection of 11 songs that mix early rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and rockabilly took home her first JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD.

JESS RIBEIRO & THE BONE COLLECTORS took out their first JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD for the Best Independent Country Album with their release  “My Little River”. Former triple j unearthed winners, their debut album is full of dark and dusty ballads that has seen them compared to the likes of Karen Dalton, Cat Power, Neil Young and Johnny Cash.

And last but not least, MIKE NOCK TRIO PLUS – took out the award for the Best Independent Jazz Album for “Hear And Know”. With an already remarkable repertoire, and as vibrant and capable as ever at 72 MIKE NOCK’S latest release features two outstanding emerging talents, saxophonist Karl Laskowski and trumpeter Ken Allars.

The JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS once again proved to be one of the Industry’s most entertaining evenings, and a night peppered with stunning live performances from artists who crossed all musical genres including award winners HERMITUDE, CHET FAKER, and LANIE LANE alongside HOUSE Vs HURRICANE, LOON LAKE, THE BAMBOOS and TIM ROGERS, and PAUL KELLY (featuring DAN KELLY).

PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 7th ANNUAL JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS!

06.09.2012

assets/images/festivals_small/JIMAS LOGO.png

The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR), is pleased to announce the performers for the seventh Annual JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS.

This year’s quality line-up is nothing short of exceptional, and will showcase some very special performances by both emerging artists and industry Icons.

Renowned as one of Australia’s most prolific singer-songwriters, having recorded 25 studio albums during his astonishing career, Paul Kelly is set to release his 26th in 2012, the very first on his own Independent label.  Performing at the JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS with nephew and fellow recording artist Dan Kelly, the two artists will join forces to perform a track from this highly anticipated album due for release later this year.

Another superb collaboration to take to the stage will be the internationally renowned Melbourne funk R & B band The Bamboos and You Am I front man Tim Rogers. The Bamboos 2012 release “Medicine Man” featured a whole host of notable international and local vocalists  - the calibre of which is testament to the immense respect garnered by bandleader and songwriter, Lance Ferguson.  One of those guest vocalists was Tim Rogers, who takes a detour from his hectic schedule to step out front of The Bamboos at the Awards to perform the infectious, bluesy single “I got Burned”.  Rogers is set to release his new album “Rogers Sings Rogerstein” on August 24th, followed by an extensive National tour through August, September and October.

Also joining the line-up is one of Australia’s premiere beats duo Hermitude. Souring to new heights in 2012 with their fourth album “HyperParadise”, Hermitude hit the bullseye of their artistic vision, with this beautifully inventive record of future beats and electronica. The album also delivered one of the standout dancefloor tunes of 2011- Speak of the Devil’ which was not only thrashed by Australian radio, but went on to win triple j’s J Award for Australian Music Video of the Year.

Blues and Alt-Country singer-songwriter and guitarist Lanie Lane brings her unique talent and charisma to the stage at this year’s Awards.  Her debut album “To The Horses”, was a collection of 11 songs that duck and weave through a heady mix of early rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and rockabilly, serving up fantastic tales of love, lust, heartbreak and the importance of a good guitar – all delivered by one of the most undeniably distinctive voices of our time.

Triple j next croppers and one of this years most exciting emerging artist’s Loon Lake will also join the line-up of live performers. The Melbourne based 5 piece have just released their highly anticipated second EP “Thirty Three” which has earned them plenty of airplay – in particular with the Top 20 hit single “Cherry Lips” - a laconic pop gem resplendent with driving riffs, rolling vocals and peppered with just the right amount of handclaps.  Their boisterous melodies and gleefully ragged riffs have also proven a winner with Australian audiences, with their current tour selling shows out across the east coast this past August, galvanizing Loon Lake’s reputation as one’s to watch in 2012.

Rounding on the live performances at the 2012 JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS is Melbourne’s own progressive hardcore outfit House vs Hurricane.  Releasing their second full length album “Crooked Teeth” this past July, the first release by the band to feature their new vocalist Dan Casey, House vs Hurricane will surely blow the roof off with what’s bound to be one heavy as hell high octane performance.

Stay tuned for further announcements including, nominations and guest presenters.

Jägermeister Releases First Television Commercial In Australia!

19.03.2012

assets/images/festivals_small/Jager creative 2.jpg

Jägermeister, the iconic German liqueur, launched a new edgy TVC campaign over the weekend – the first ever TVC for the brand in the Australian market.

The TVC was created in Germany in August 2010, and has been adapted for this market by mixitup with a new sound track by independent Australian songstress, Abbe May. It also supports the Australian campaign tagline ‘Hunting since 1935’ which acknowledges the unique heritage of the Jägermeister brand, which dates back to 1935. When translated, Jägermeister means ‘Hunting Master’.

The commercial features a party of young people, heading out on foot into the night in search of a secret location, guided by the Jägermeister stag. Reaching their destination, they ascend to the top floor of a building, where the lift doors open to reveal a private party on a roof-top atrium. A full moon casts an incandescent glow over the scene, as they enjoy Jägermeister and dance through the night.

Jonathan Howells, group brand manager at Suntory (Australian distributor for Jägermeister) said: “In the new advertising campaign, Jägermeister invites people to ‘hunt out’ a new drinking experience. The commercial taps into the social behavior of our core audience of 20-35 year olds, who constantly seek out new cultural experiences and are the first to be ‘in the know’.”

It will be supported by a $1 million multi-tiered advertising program across TV, cinema and digital from March-April 2012. Media planning and strategy for the campaign has been managed by ZenithOptimedia.

The doors of Sydney Festival’s most intimate music venue, the Jägermeister Hunting Lodge, are now closed!

Nestled amongst the trees in the Honda Festival Garden, the lodge fast became the place to be and to be seen as guests lapped up 18 nights of free music including exclusive shows from Tim Finn, Emma Louise and Josh Pyke.

The lodge also hosted special performances from other festival artists including Megan Washington who dropped in to play a DJ set, international guest Nick Zinner (ex Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Tune Yards’ Merrill Garbus and New York band Soft Circle.

At times the lodge provided welcome shelter from the unseasonal January rain, as Jägermeister fans kicked back with an ice-cold long drink of Jägermeister, ginger beer and fresh lime.

The Jägermeister Hunting Lodge is a nod to the brand’s German heritage (Jägermeister means ‘Hunting Master’), bringing to life the legacy of the brand, which has been around since 1935. The rustic and enchanting pop-up bar is made entirely of logs, complete with a wooden deck, timber floor, stone fireplace and 12 metre long bar.

We can’t wait to open the lodge doors again soon, check out the Jagermeister Australia Facebook Page for updates!

2011 JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS WINNERS

13.10.2011

assets/images/festivals_small/145__DSC7415.jpg

The 2011 JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS have wrapped up their sixth year delivering a superbly entertaining evening and bestowing 12 Awards on some of Australia’s finest talent, with THE JEZABELS the only multiple award winners, taking out 2 major honours.

Rising stars THE JEZABELS well and truly made their mark on the evening picking up the awards for Best Independent Single /EP for their critically acclaimed debut EP “Dark Storm”  (the third and final installment of their EP Trilogy) and also the award for Best Independent Artist. Already enjoying a massive year both locally and internationally and now, winners in two categories at the JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS, its little wonder THE JEZABELS have been earmarked as a band to watch.

It was a night out for our female artists who not only blew everyone away with their live performances but also in the award stakes, with Rock icon ADALITA, taking out the gong in the hotly contested Best Independent Album category, earning well deserved and long awaited recognition for her first solo album, the self-titled “Adalita.  Newcomer EMMA LOUISE was acknowledged as the Breakthrough Independent Artist for the sublime sounds of her ep “Full Hearts and Empty Rooms” and its superb singleJungle” which spent more than 20 weeks at the top of the Independent charts.

Perth based Hip Hop artist DRAPHT won his first JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD for Best Independent Hip Hop Album for the epic release, “The Life Of Riley”.  Currently on a sold out 21 date National Australian tour, “The Life Of Riley” album debuted at Number 1 on the ARIA chart, and gave us the hits “Bali Party”, “Sing it” and “Rapunzel”, and is now officially certified Gold.   Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album went to Melbourne Trio MY DISCO for their third and highly acclaimed record 'Little Joy'.   An astounding collection of songs from the first single ‘Young’ - a near nine-minute-long epic, to the chilling and tightly-wound sounds of 'River”, MY DISCO have managed to cultivate enormous respect among independent music communities both locally and internationally, and now further acknowledgement comes in the form of this year’s Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album award.

This year also saw the Awards expanding into new territory, with the introduction of the Best Independent Dance / Electronica or Club Single category. The new category also produced another first, with the Award voting resulting in a tie taken out by TOMMY TRASH AND TOM PIPER for their single “All My Friends Featuring Mr. Wilson” and SEEKAE with their track “Blood Bank”. London based Australian duo PNAU took out the already established award for Best Independent Dance / Electronica album with “Soft Universe”, a 10 track opus that has been described as the finest example yet of their epic techno pop, and is their 4th studio album and most successful charting record to date.

The Award for the Best Independent Blues and Roots Album (for his double Deadly Award winning release “Rrakala”) was taken out by former winner GURRUMUL. His second full-length release, “Rrakala” follows in the footsteps of his multi award winning double platinum debut album and confirms GURRUMUL’S status as one of the definitive Australian folk artists of our times.  WAGONS took out their first JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD for the Best Independent Country Album with their latest release “Rumble, Shake and Tumble”. From its stomping outlaw country tracks, to the irresistible crooning classic pop songs, charismatic front man Henry Wagons wields his mighty fist as a premiere story teller on this, the band’s stunning fifth studio album.

Internationally renowned saxophonist, composer and multi-award winner SANDY EVANS was awarded Best Independent Jazz album for her 60 minute extended jazz composition  “When The Sky Cries Rainbows”. These outstanding works, exquisitely played, created a landmark album, which has now been recognized as the JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD’S finest Jazz album for 2011, adding to EVAN’S already remarkable repertoire.

And finally taking out the peoples choice award for Jagermeister’s Most Hunted was 360 who released his groundbreaking second album, “Falling & Flying” last week, to critical acclaim and booming sales. Debuting in the top 5 of the ARIA charts this week and remaining at the top of the iTunes Album charts, the sophomore release from this innovative indie rapper sounds like no hip-hop release to come before it, and the public agreed by voting 360 the inaugural Most Hunted artist at the 2011 JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS

The JAGERMEISTER INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS once again proved to be one of the Industry’s most entertaining evenings, and a night peppered with stunning live performances from artists who crossed all musical genres including award winners ADALITA and EMMA LOUSE, alongside CALLING ALL CARS, ILLY (featuring OWL EYES) and THE HOLIDAYS.

Jagermeister Appoints mixitup to Lead Agency Role!

23.06.2011

assets/images/festivals_small/Jager Logo.jpg

Sydney, June 23rd, 2011: Independent brand entertainment agency mixitup has been appointed lead agency for liqueur brand Jagermeister after a highly competitive pitch process involving some of Australias leading agencies.

A departure from many marketers’ traditional agency line-ups, the appointment sees mixitup (www.mixitup.com.au) taking the lead strategic role for Jagermeister, working with incumbent media agency Z Media, social media agency Pages Digital and newly appointed PR agency, Stellar.

“mixitup have demonstrated great abilities to think strategically and execute effectively in re-positioning Jagermeister,” said Group Brand Manager Jonathan Howells. “Appointing mixitup to the lead agency role, supported by the key roles in PR, social media as well as media planning and buying, gives us the right mix to develop and to roll out our new strategy and campaigns.”

Jagermeister has worked with mixitup for the past five years, on branded entertainment events including music festivals and on Jagermeister’s collaboration with the independent music industry through its naming rights partnership of the Independent Music Awards and Charts.

Greg Segal, Managing Director of mixitup, said the agency would be building on the successful communication platforms the agency had created for Jagermeister over the past five years.

“We have demonstrated our ability to impact perceptions and deliver genuine partnerships for Jagermeister and our lead agency role gives us a broader remit with the brand. We are looking forward to working in collaboration with the Jagermeister team and the other agencies to roll out the new national strategy and campaigns”.

Segal said mixitup was founded in 2006 initially as a music and event sponsorship business that has naturally evolved into a brand entertainment agency. He said the agency had developed specific skills in brand strategy, account service, major event management and production, as well as research and insights.

His second release, the album received extraordinary accolades, and has been described as representing a milestone in contemporary Australian jazz, proving to be a more than worthy winner.

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS' second album The Crystal Axis won Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album in a hotly contested category. Hailed as de facto pioneers of a new frontier of "indie-dance", the band pushed the boundaries even further on album number 2, and were rewarded for their efforts as they also brought home their second award in this category, after winning back in 2007.

And finally, the inaugural award for Most Popular Independent Artist (as voted by Nova listeners) went to JOHN BUTLER TRIO. Undeniably one of the most successful independent artists in Australia and no strangers to picking up Awards, this is the second Independent Music Award the band have collected, after Best Independent Artist in 2007, in a career spanning more than a decade.

Independent Music Re-Brands for Consumers

25.08.2010

Jager Indie Awards logo

The nation’s independent music industry has received a major marketing boost with spirit brand Jagermeister signing a three-year deal to partner with the re-launched independent music awards and independent music charts.

The new home for Australian independent music can be found online at www.ausindies.com

Also coming on board as official media partners are the XYZ Networks’
Channel [V], national radio station Nova and social networking site MySpace, who will provide year-round television, radio and internet platforms for the new awards and weekly charts program. In a four-way deal brokered by brand entertainment company mixitup, the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards and Jagermeister Independent Music Charts will re-launch after previously being called the AIR Awards and AIR Charts.  mixitup was also responsible for the new consumer strategy and re-brand.

Independent artists are the risk takers of the music world, playing beyond the constraints of major record labels and free to follow artistic vision wherever it leads.

Presented by the Australian Independent Record Label Association (AIR), the
Jagermeister Independent Music Awards are about recognising something unique and real – acknowledging that artistic accomplishment does not always go hand-in-hand with commercial success, and that the boundaries of creativity and ingenuity stretch far and beyond the top 40.  This will also be represented weekly through the Jagermeister Independent Music Charts.

Jagermeister Brand Manager Jonathan Howells said the opportunity to align the brand with independent music is consistent with its brand positioning. “Jagermeister has a long history of alignment with popular and new music, both overseas and in Australia. The independent music partnership is a very natural fit for us and we’re excited about the plans we have to build this strategic alliance over the coming years.”

Stuart Couzens, Executive Producer and Partner at mixitup, said the new platform for marketing independent music reflected the strong interest among consumers in Australian music. “Independent music continues to shape the Australian cultural landscape and partnering Jagermeister with Channel [V], Nova and MySpace demonstrates that the media power brands understand how attractive popular and emerging independent music is to consumers, and that they can access this music through any media,” he said.

Shaun James, General Manager of XYZnetworks Music Channels commented, “As the leading broadcaster of music television in Australia, Channel [V] understands the importance of fostering independent and emerging talent in Australia, as well as recognising and rewarding excellence in the way that AIR does. We are proud to be partnering with AIR for another year to deliver the Jagermeister Independent Music Charts, and the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards to our audience.”

Wade Kingsley, Nova Group Integration Manager said, “Part of Nova’s DNA is to support Independent music, so we’re thrilled to be partnering with the Australian Independent Record Association.  Our listeners look to Nova to recommend the best new music no matter where it’s from, and we love bringing it to them.  This partnership will allow us to further demonstrate our now decade long commitment to Australian Independent artists and we’re rapped to be on board”.

Dan Stapleton, Editor, MySpace Music Australia  said “From the very earliest days, music has been central to the MySpace experience. MySpace is a place where young artists can forge an identity and build a fan base. As the biggest music site in Australia, MySpace has become synonymous with the discovery of new music. We’re committed to remaining integral to cultural conversation that bubbles constantly around emerging and independent music, and being part of the Jagermeister Independent Music Awards & Charts is yet another way to demonstrate that commitment. We’re thrilled to be on board.”

AIR (the Australian Independent Record Labels Association) is a non-profit, non government national trade association promoting and representing the interests and development of Australian independent artists, labels and music companies in Australia and throughout the world.  AIR has published Australia's Independent Music Charts for 10 years and will this year present its 5th Independent Music Awards.
