Red Bull Music Academy Celebrates 15 Years in Splendid Style

Splendour 2013

At this year's new Splendour In The Grass location, the Red Bull Music Academy Stage offered shelter from the elements and the best dance floor on site.

The mixitup team were tasked with the design and production of Red Bull's biggest festival activation to date, which was held at Splendour to celebrate 15 years of the Red Bull Music Academy leading the way in the world of contemporary electronic music in both Australia and around the globe.

The masterfully curated RBMA Stage ran from Thursday night, through until Monday morning, with a total of 57 artists performing. The lineup showcased a mix of up and coming homegrown talent such as Hayden James, Charles Murdoch and Oisima. Along with established internationals such as Onra and James Pants.

Due to the progressive nature of the music on display, the stage was a hot spot for industry, media and music tastemakers. Including Andrew Mast, Group Managing Editor of Street Press Australia who said "The lineup for the Red Bull stage at Splendour is THE best festival bill I have seen in over a decade".

The success and vibe of the stage was further validated, as it became the hang out zone for artist performing on other stages. Flume, Flight Facilities, Alison in Wonderland, Jagwa Ma, Fat Freddy's Drop, Chet Faker, Matt Corby and RUFUS all stopped in for a drink, chat and to enjoy the platter of incredible music on offer.

Stay tuned in for more exciting news involving mixitup and Red Bull!

Breakdancing To Bach A Surprising Success

assets/images/festivals_small/Flyaing Bach digtal_03.jpg

It sounds like a mad idea – setting breakdance to Bach in a thoroughly commercial production with the sponsor's name wound into the title. But it actually works.

The success of the piece is due to the artistic integrity of the music and dance. And the dancing is just amazing.

This is breakdance refined to the point where you could describe it as elegant. There are seven male performers, each with different personalities and specialities, but all capable

of individual feats of high-powered action that make you wonder if you are seeing things.

Their bodies seem to ignore gravity as they twist and turn, changing direction mid-air and upside down, balanced on one arm. Time and again. It is jaw-dropping. And when they are all performing as an ensemble, even more so. They also have a couple of head-spinners who manage to propel themselves with arms and legs into dizzying displays as human spinning tops.

A lone female dancer adds a contemporary dance element, but she has formidable competition for attention.

There are two onstage musicians playing from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Part I on piano and harpsichord – amplified of course – and occasionally we get a feistier 21st-century updated version from a recording. The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an ideal finale, gets the full recorded organ treatment.

The presentation is simple but slick. Everything is focused on the quality of the dancing, which is fast, furious and absolutely precise. A treat.

Red Bull Bedroom Jam Announce Six Bands to Play Homebake 2012

assets/images/festivals_small/RBBJ 2012.png

Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012 is nearing the end. The last hurrah as part of the multi-part competition that encourages young musicians to share their music with the world is naming six bands to take to the stage at one of Australia’s premier music festivals, Homebake.

The winners from phase one and phase two of the yearlong competition, Go Mason Go (NSW) and The Vanns (NSW), will be joined by four wild card performers Altitude (VIC), Syd Kids (NSW), Tired Lion (WA) and Blueberry Circuit (NSW).

Go Mason Go

After being crowned phase one winners, Go Mason Go went to Melbourne to record a few of their original guitar pop tracks as part of the Red Bull Bedroom Jam prize pack. Now, only weeks after completing their school certificate, they’ll be the envy of all their mates as they take to the stage at Homebake.

The Vanns

Recently, a four-piece from the south coast of NSW called The Vanns impressed judges at the phase two final at Sydney’s Hi-Fi. Amongst finishing high school, the guys have been playing a heap of local gigs and also squeezing in some studio time. Fresh from schoolies, they will no doubt keep the party vibes going for Homebake 2012.

Garage rock outfit Altitude stood out from the hundreds of entries with their energetic rock stylings. Hailing from Geelong, Luke, Liam, Lachy and Tommy met at St Joseph’s College and in 2010 they knuckled down to pen some original tunes. Earlier this year, they won the Pushover Battle of the Bands and are now stoked to be a wild card for Red Bull Bedroom Jam.

Syd Kids

Sydney duo Syd Kids will bring some hip-hop and RnB flavours to the stage at Homebake With an army of online fans, it’s no surprise that already in their short career that have played with the likes of Ja Rule, Akon, T-Pain and Scribe. Describing themselves as more than just rappers, they utilize dance, acrobatics and vocals and are sure to bring the house down on December 8.

Tired Lion

Emerging from the streets Perth, four-piece Tired Lion are ecstatic to be heading east to play Homebake. Describing their sound as obscure and ambient, they site the alternative sounds of The Smashing Pumpkins, The Pixies and Sonic Youth as their key influences. Recently, they recorded a single with well-known Perth producer Andy Lawson (Eskimo Joe, Little Birdy) and there are whispers of their debut EP being just around the corner.

Blueberry Circuit

After meeting in high school Tyne, Fletcher, Andrew and Romie merged their eclectic musical tastes to create Blueberry Circuit. With influences ranging from Katchafire to Sticky Fingers to Ball Park Music, their pop-reggae sounds are one of a kind.

The six finalists play Homebake on Saturday, December 8. Tickets are available from

The Vanns Win Phase Two of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012

assets/images/festivals_small/RBBJ 2012.png

From the South Coast of New South Wales come The Vanns – the winners of a phase two of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012.

On Sunday night the five finalists EXIT, 50 in the City, Indiago, The Patriots and The Vanns took to the stage at Sydney’s Hi-Fi to battle it out for the top position. All five brought their a-game to the stage but it was The Vanns’ indie pop sounds that impressed the judging panel.

" Talk about upping the ante! Last night’s Bedroom Jam final was amazing. All of the bands were great in their own right but it was The Vanns who blew everyone away! I was genuinely excited watching them. Great songs, incredible front man and an energy that I haven't seen in a young band for quite some time. I really do believe that this is the start of something really special!" says judge and A&R expert Michael Parisi.

Scoring themselves a week’s worth of studio time, exposure through Red Bull Bedroom Jam media partners and channels and the support and guidance of Michael Parisi, The Vanns were stoked with their performance and win.

Lachie (drummer, vocals) from The Vanns - “We had a great night at The Hi Fi, it’s definitely the best sounding venue we've played. All the other bands were heaps nice and played amazingly as well. It was pretty awesome to get to meet The Getaway Plan and to hang out with them as well.”

Now, we await the verdict of the six lucky acts to take to the stage at Homebake 2012.

assets/images/festivals_small/RBBJ 2012.png

The five webcast winners from phase two of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012 are set to take to the stage at premier Sydney music venue, The Hi-Fi, on Sunday October 28th alongside accomplished Melbourne rock band The Getaway Plan. EXIT (SA), 50 in the City (SA), The Vanns (NSW), Indiago (SA) and The Patriots (NSW) will play for the Red Bull Bedroom Jam Judges who will then decide which outfit walks away the winner with five days recording time.

The Getaway Plan returned to Australian stages last year with their second album “Requiem”, packed with punch with the infectious hooks the band became known for off the back of their first record “Other Voices, Other Rooms” which featured the hit single ‘Where the City Meets the Sea’. Known for selling out shows around the country since their formation, it’s a sure thing that The Getaway Plan will be a rocking end to an evening of exciting emerging talent.

Taking on adjudication duties are Michael Parisi (Wunderkind, Michael Parisi Management), Dan Bessant (Program Director at XYZ Networks), Ella Hooper (musician, radio personality and host of Red Bull Bedroom Jam), Corbin Harris (Pro Skater/TV Personality) as well as the boys from The Getaway Plan. Not only are the five finalists playing to a packed house, they are also having their music heard by some of the most influential industry in the country.

Additionally, a total of six Red Bull Bedroom Jam entrants will be chosen to take part in one of the country’s biggest music festivals, Homebake 2012. Two will be chosen out of the combined ten finalists (phase one and phase two) and the other four will be wild cards chosen from all the entrants on If you’re yet to get your entry up, you have until November 1st to be in the running.

Red Bull Bedroom Jam Entrants have the Chance to Play Homebake 2012 & The Red Bull Bedroom Jam Webcast Winners #8 – The Vanns

assets/images/festivals_small/the vanns.jpg

Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012 just got a whole lot bigger! All entrants into the online competition are now in the running to play at one of Australia’s biggest music festivals, Homebake, alongside the likes of Birds of Tokyo, Hilltop Hoods and Kimbra.

Six bands in total will have the opportunity to grace the stage. Two of them will be chosen from the ten webcast winners, while the other four will be personally chosen by the festival owner out of all the entries correctly registered at That means it’s a better time than ever to get your entry in to the competition.

Announced in November, the six chosen to perform will score themselves a full festival experience including return airfares to Sydney from their nearest capital city, airport transfers, accommodation, transfers to the festival, professional sound check and stage management and a 10 minute set.

In the running for a spot at Homebake is webcast winner #8 The Vanns. Hailing from the surfy town of Kiama on the south coast of New South Wales, the four-piece have high hopes to bring back a blues scene but with a new age indie twist.

After cementing their line up in February this year James Vann (17, Guitar and Vocals), Lachlan Jones (18, Drums), Robert Korber (Keys and Backing Vocals) and Adam Bernich (17, Bass) have been writing new tunes and gigging around their hometown all while finishing high school.

The Vanns like the sounds of bands such as Ball Park Music and Jinja Safari and off the back of seven demos that they recently recorded, they have already had some national radio airplay. The indie outfit is also releasing their first EP later this year.

Go Mason Go Win Phase One of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012

New South Wales five piece, Go Mason Go, have won the first phase of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012.

The five finalists Lets Not Pretend, Masketta Fall, Your Ticket Home, Go Mason Go and Break A Leg travelled to the outer suburbs of Melbourne last Saturday for the Red Bull Backyard Jam final, which took place in the backyard of Masketta Fall’s drummer, Jamie Ross. With a set up that mirrored a small festival stage, all five played their best three tracks to a backyard full of fans and friends as well as the panel of judges. The afternoon was capped off with an awesome set from Melbourne rockers, Stonefield.

The judges had their work cut out for them, but concluded Go Mason Go to be the stand out of the day. Judge and A&R expert Michael Parisi affirms,  “All of the finalists were great and played really well but Go Mason Go were a stand out. While they have a way to go as a band, they have a freshness and a real point of difference. Their songs are fun, simple and catchy and they have so much scope to become a genuine contender. I’m going to enjoy helping them and watching them grow and evolve in the process”.

“The weekend in Melbourne at the Red Bull Backyard Jam was so much fun and an incredible experience. The other bands were really awesome and it was such a pleasure to play with them making it a real privilege to win such beneficial prizes,” says Jesse Taunton (vocals/guitar, 15) of Go Mason Go who have scored themselves a week’s worth of studio time, exposure through Red Bull Bedroom Jam media partners and channels and the support and guidance of Michael Parisi.

Phase two of Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2012 kicks off now with the first finalist decided on Monday the 16th of July.

Red Bull Bedroom Jam’s phase one final, Red Bull Backyard Jam, will be taking over Masketta Fall’s backyard on Saturday, July 7 in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. Masketta Fall along with the other finalists Lets Not Pretend, Your Ticket Home,

Go Mason Go and Break A Leg will be firing up the stage before headliners Stonefield finish off the afternoon of live music.

Spending time in your backyard is something that is engrained in Australian culture. Whether it is a BBQ with friends, a game of cricket or simply sitting under the pergola, we often forget how unique these past times are to our country. Red Bull Backyard Jam takes this notion to a whole new level - erecting a stage, bringing in a live music crew and putting on a killer afternoon of live music in the backyard. It’s a band competition like no other.

The 2012 event is set to take place in the southern suburbs of Melbourne, home to Bradden “FayBanger” Ross (Vocals, 19) and Jamie “Rolph” Ross (Drums, 21) – brothers in Masketta Fall. The band’s social networks have been overflowing with content and band to fan interaction, so much so, their Facebook fans have almost doubled since their webcast win. The others didn’t go down without a fight – Lets Not Pretend was right there with them until Masketta Fall pipped them at the post. Bands had to create as much noise on their social media networks, to climb their way up the BUZZ chart to win the honour of hosting the outdoor concert.

Red Bull Backyard Jam takes place on Saturday July 7th. The winner, decided by the panel of expert judges on the day, scores studio time to work on their next release.

Red Bull Backyard Jam

Teen Band from Melbourne on their way to London after winning round one of Red Bull Bedroom Jam

Welcome Wednesday from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs have rocked their way to victory at the Red Bull Backyard Jam event, held in Alice Springs on Saturday 7th May. The winners of the first round of the 2011 Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition will be heading to London in June to record in Red Bull’s state of the art studios, before performing the gig of a lifetime at legendary rock festival Download.

The four piece rock band conquered the Backyard Jam on Saturday after defeating over 350 other hopeful bands on the Buzz Chart and three other finalists on the day at a live gig in the Red Centre, alongside award winning Aussie garage rockers British India.

Welcome Wednesday’s lead vocalist and guitarist Max Roberts, 17, said ‘‘we can’t believe we’re going to London to record and play at Download! This is by far the biggest thing that’s happened for us as a band. We never thought we’d get this far so soon.”

British India took time out from their national tour to play their only date in the Northern Territory and help judge the Red Bull Bedroom Jam finalists. They sat alongside David Vodicka, Chairman of AIR and CEO of Rubber Records, Sarah Smith, Editor of Faster Louder and MTV host Daisy McHarg-McKenzie, on the industry judging panel.

The four finalists - songwriter Scott Boyd, garage band Jagged Lies and Welcome Wednesday, all from Melbourne, and electro thrash metal group The Sky’s The Limit from Alice Springs - battled it out to impress the judges before headliners British India took to the stage.

“It’s pretty awesome to be a part of something like Red Bull Bedroom Jam that is helping to nurture Aussie talent like Welcome Wednesday and give bands the confidence to tackle the industry,” said British India’s Declan Melia.

For bands itching to follow in Welcome Wednesday’s footsteps and get involved, there’s still time to be part of Red Bull Bedroom Jam.  The second round of the competition that will send one band to LA this September is now live!

Bands simply need to upload a video of an original track to and spread the word to encourage their friends and fans to hop online and generate some noise.

The first webcast winner of the next phase will be announced on 2nd June.

Pop/punk band Way With Words from Melbourne have rocked their way into a promising music career by winning the first Australian Red Bull Bedroom Jam.

Dylan Giannakopoulos (guitar), Luke Mann (guitar), Sam Berry (bass), Jack Nicholls (drums) and Joey Cirillo (vocals) will head to Los Angeles, USA in January for a recording session at Red Bull’s state of the art recording studios – a prize worth over $80,000.

Downsyde Takes Out The 2009 Red Bull Soundclash!

Redbull Soundclash Downsyde

It’s final. Hip hop heavyweights, Downsyde are the winners of the Red Bull Soundclash for 2009, beating indie rock sensation Little Red in a closely contested battle of the bands.  From one challenging round to the next, blow by blow, note by note, the unstoppable Downsyde finally defeated Little Red to claim the coveted trophy.

The energy at the UNSW Roundhouse was at its peak as fans streamed from the beer garden and into the Roundhouse for the second Soundclash event to hit Oz.  Channel V presenters Renee and Kyle proved to be a dynamic duo in hosting the innovative musical event, and with DJ Leeroy Brown of Katalyst on the decks, the excitement was undeniable.

When the bands finally took to their respective stages, the Roundhouse was filled to the brink and the 700-strong crowd brought the commotion.  The audience were transported from rock to reggae, house to hip-hop and ultimately decided who the winner was based on applause. The “decibel-meter” measured the sonic energy of the crowd by microphone, which was meticulously positioned from the ceiling. The results were then displayed on massive screens for all to see.

After a tight four-round contest it was hip-hop that reigned supreme with Downsyde taking out the trophy and with it, a place in Red Bull Soundclash history.

The competitive energy on stage was really more of a friendly rivalry, and the bands played this competition to perfection. The music was never-heard-before, jaw-dropping brilliance and the crowd appreciated every minute.

As the giant Red Bull Soundclash trophy was handed over to Downsyde, the two bands united on stage for a final performance of Bob Marley’s ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ to end the night. The fans suddenly found themselves cheering for both bands and there was no longer any sign of competition. Both bands certainly flexed their musical muscles and made sure nobody would forget this one-of-a-kind music event!

If you weren’t there to witness the action in person or just want to re-live the experience Channel [V] will be screening the 2009 Red Bull Soundclash on Sunday November 1st at 11.00am.

The Red Bull Stage at F1 Rocks Singapore

Red Bull Stage at F1 Rocks! Sinagpore

It was a three day musical extravaganza in Singapore when some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the world performed on the Red Bull Stage at the inaugural F1 Rocks Singapore music festival, held September 24th – 26th 2009.

Red Bull is certainly a brand that loves to do things differently, and in keeping with that ethos, mixitup created a truly unique design for the Red Bull Stage: shipping containers stacked on top of one another, against a backdrop of natural greenery at Fort Canning Park.

The outcome was a visual treat for fans, with its modern, raw industrial design and graffiti artwork. Some lucky fans even got the chance to enter the special VIP area atop a container for a direct view of the stage. A totally unique concert experience!

Brooklyn based rock band, Black Gold, headlined the stage, accompanied by UK beatbox extraordinaire Killa Kela and ZPYZ from Berlin. The supporting cast included Singapore’s very own Red Bull Music Academy alumni DJs Debbie Chia, Vijay Singh, Aresha and Sonicbrat, as well as popular local DJ Ko Flow. Completing the line-up was DJ Chris McGuiness from India, better known as the godfather of the Indian hip hop scene.

On-screen visuals were created by Singaporean VJ duo Achtung!Achtung (that’s German for Attention! Attention! in case you didn’t know) who have worked with Steve Aoki and The Rapture, amongst many others.

With Red Bull’s strong engagement with the Formula 1, and history of innovative music projects around the globe, the Red Bull Stage was a natural fit for a mega event like F1 Rocks!

Red Bull Soundclash First time in Australia!

Redbull Sound Clash

Gloves became musical instruments and mouth guards became microphones last night as the Hordern Pavillion transformed into a musical boxing ring for the Red Bull Soundclash.  Rock and hip hop culture, complete opposites of the musical spectrum, went head to head exchanging blows for an entire evening in what was the musical bout of the century.

The Red Bull Soundclash has its roots deep in the tropical reggae sound system clashes of Jamaica, but trust Red Bull to give it a contemporary caffeinated twist, pitting bands of opposing genres against each other to create a unique clash of sound, style and creativity.

In one corner was TZU with a planned attack of beats and rhymes and in the other, The Vasco Era looking for salvation in the holy trinity of guitar, bass and drums.  The crowd, acting as referee, were plot in the middle of the two stages to actively judge each band’s musical prowess during the interactive musical performance.

The Vasco Era abided by all the artistic rules of the musical conversation to beat up their opponent, TZU in four rounds.  The ecstatic cheers of the crowd measured off the decibel-o-meter, leaving host Yumi Stynes no choice but to crown the Vasco Era as the Red Bull Soundclash King.

The extraordinary music contest set pulses racing, and left everyone’s eardrums ringing well into the night.

I wonder what musical genius will step into the ring in 2009 when the Red Bull Soundclash comes to town in October.  Be sure to find all the details here as soon as they are announced!!
